Grammar and vocabulary
Yayoi: Jonas, can we talk?
ジョナス、今ちょっと話できる?
Jonas: Sure, Yayoi. It sounds important.
いいわよ、ヤヨイ。何か重要な話のようね。
説明型オーバーラッピング
be動詞の文と同様、基本的な意味は「it = important」。ここではsound
(聞こえる)が使われているため「it = important(に聞こえる)」となり、文全体に
オーバーラップしている。

何か個人的に話しがしたいの?
Yayoi: Yes, let’s go into the conference room for a few minutes.
そうなのよ、ほんの数分でいいから、会議室に行きましょう。
Jonas: Sure. So, what’s all this about?
分かったわ。それで、一体どうしたの。
Yayoi: I’m going to take a break from my job for a while.
私、しばらく仕事から休みをとることにするわ。
Yayoi: A break? Like a leave of absence?

Yayoi: Yes. I need to take care of some personal stuff.

wh節
what以下はwh節(疑問形を伴わない、文の部品)。what you have to do
には当然疑問の意味はない。「あなたが何をしなくてはならないのか」
「あなたがしなくてはならないこと」両用の形。

Feel English Key Sentence
Can we talk?
talkは「話し合う」。コミュニケーションに焦点が置かれ、「2人で話し合い・おしゃべりできますか」。
speakは「(口から)音声を出すー「一方通行」を基調とする動詞。
① speak slowly ゆっくり話す
speak English 英語を話す
speak on social issues 社会問題について演説する
「音声を出す」に焦点が当たっており、「話し合い」の意識はない。
speakの「演説する(=make a speech)」は、一方通行で
フォーマルな感触。
演説にtalk(talk about~) を用いる場合は、リラックスした話し合いの雰囲気が
感じられる。
② Can I speak{talk} to Chris? - Speaking.
クリスさんをお願いできますか?―私です。
電話での定番表現。Speakingは「口を利いています→私です。」
talkingは×。まだおしゃべりしていないので。
③ I can’t speak for everyone, but~
みんなを代表しているわけではないのですが、~
speak forは「代表する・代弁する」。グループを代表して「外に向かって」
意見を表明する。
I’ve spoken to our boss about it.
それについて、君の上司に言っておいたから。
④ 前置詞とのコンビネーション
・「~と(話す)」 to かwith
talk to [with] Chris about the matter
クリスとそのことについて話す
・「~について(話す)」 about

フォーマルなスピーチをするということ。onは専門的な感触のある「~について」

日本語独特な言葉・習慣で、ぴったりの英語表現がない。

(レストランあれば) 「では、行きましょうか?→ごちそうさま」
6月20日(月)の献立 チリコンカン
今日は孫娘の立ち寄りが無かったため、仕事から帰った後お風呂に入り、その後うたた寝をしてしまい、そのせいで夕食の差し入れを作ることが出来ませんでした。
昨日大豆を1袋戻し、今日はスパイシーなチリコンカンを作ろうと準備していましたので、孫息子が帰った後、我が家用だけに作りました。
私は好きな味でしたが、夫はなにやら不満気? 娘一家にも差し入れは気が引ける感じで、結局今日は仕方のない日でした。

6月19日(日)の献立 牛丼
(土)(日)と孫たちが来ず、久しぶりに静かな時間を過ごしました。もっとも夫は二日間とも仕事のようなもの、私は日長一日パソコンの前に座りっぱなしでした。
昼食は一人で冷や麦、夜は麺の残りを夫に、私は牛丼を作って簡素な食事となりました。孫たちが来ないとこんなもんです。

itは文脈にあらわれた事物や状況を「受ける」単語で、was so cool
(それはとても素敵でした)と続ける。何が「素敵だった」のかを
to不定詞で続けて付け加えている。とにかくitで文を始めてしまう。

This sandwich tastes funny.
①この文は説明型オーバーラッピングでtaste, smell, feelが使われる代表的な形。

②taste, smell, feelのポイントは、イ積極的・自発的な動作と、

やってくる感覚。
聴覚の イ listen「聞く」 ⇔ ア hear「聞こえる」

can tasteは「味がする」―向こうからやってくる感覚。この感覚を表す動詞と
canは強く結びつく。

イ Smell it. においを嗅いでみて。
3. feelは手で触れて感じる、触角を表す動詞

イ Feel it. 感じて「触って」みて。
*なぜ視覚・聴覚では別の動詞に割り振られている2つの使い方が、味覚taste,
嗅覚smell, 触覚feelでは同居しているのか?
動詞を分ける必要があるほど繊細ではないからか。
