Caspar: Hi, Alexis! I’m home. What a hot day!
ハーイ、アレクシス、ただいま。なんて熱い日なんだ!
Alexis: Caspar, what are you doing?
キャスパー、あなた何をしているの?
Caspar: I’m taking off my socks.
靴下を脱いでいるんだよ。
I’ve been driving all day and my feet are hot!
一日中車を運転してきて、両足が熱いんだ。
Alexis: And you’re just going to leave your socks on the floor?
そして今あなたの靴下をフロアに脱ぎっ放しにしているの?
Caspar: For now, yes.
今なら、そうだね。
Alexis: How many times do I have to tell you?
一体、何回あなたに言わなくちゃいけないの?
大きなwh語・疑問の意味を持たない「疑問文」
wh語にほかの語を伴った「大きなwh語」how many times。
how(どれくらい)を用い回数を尋ねるwh語、文中での使い方は
what、whoなど単体のwh語と変わりない。文頭に置き、後ろに
do I疑問形を従えている。疑問文の形をとってはいるが、相手に
尋ねているわけではなく、相手をとがめている言い方になっている。

putのイメージ
putは平面上に物を置くだけにとどまらず、「何かを・どこかに・ポン」が
イメージ。この文のように「容器の中に入れる」場合にも使える。
Caspar: I’ll do it later.
後でするよ。
Alexis: Oh, come on. You never do it later.
ねえ、いいかげんにして。あなた、後でしたことなんてないじゃないの。

Feel English Key Sentence
It drives me crazy.
driveは「運転する」だが、基本イメージは「力を加えて動かす」。この文は目的語説明型、「me= crazyの状態に動かす(=ひどくイライラさせる)」という意味。
1. 物理的に「力を加える」。drivenは「(~に)動かされて」、原動力を表してる。
① drive the tent pegs into the ground テントのペグを地面に打ち込む
② be driven by electricity 電気によって動く
③ be driven by jealousy ジェラシーに突き動かされる
④ steam-driven vehicle 蒸気駆動の乗り物
2. 「運転する」
① drive a sports car / a taxi スポーツカー/タクシー を運転する
② drive you home / to the airport あなたを 家/空港まで 車で送る
3. キーセンテンスと同種
① drive her mad [nuts] 彼女をひどくイライラさせる
② drive her out of her mind 彼女の正気を失わせる
out of~ 「~の外へ」
4. ある場所に追いやる感触のフレーズ。to不定詞
① drive him to crime / despair / his death
彼を犯罪 / 絶望 / 死に 追いやる
② drive him into a corner 彼を窮地に追い詰める
③ His wife’s nagging drove him to drink.
妻の小言が彼を飲みたい気分にさせた。

1. どんな車に乗っているのですか?
What kind of car do you drive?
・現在形の文。「ふだん・習慣的に」と、広く一般的な状況を描いている。
・what kind of は「どういう種類の~」、大きなwh語。
2. 孤独はしばしば人を酒におぼれさせる
Loneliness often drives people to drink.
3. 近所の人が飼っている犬の鳴き声が腹立たしい。
My neighbor’s dog’s whining drives me nuts.
・drives ~ nutsは「~をひどくイライラさせる」。
・whineは犬の鳴き声を表す動詞。

最重要表現「~がある」「~がない」「~がありますか?」
1. 迷ったら動詞haveを使う。
・日本語と文頭が同じ
①「私の故郷には~がある」=My hometown has~
・単数と複数形について悩まなくて済む
②「ロビーに快適な椅子がある」
There is ~. or There are ~. ?
→ the lobby has very comfortable chairs.
③長野県にはきれいな山がたくさんあります。
Nagano has so many beautiful mountains.
④このパソコンには重要なファイルが入っています。
This computer has some very important files (in it).
⑤飛騨高山では素晴らしい祭りが秋に開催されます。
Hida Takayama has a wonderful festival in the fall.
2. 一般的な状態について言うときはThere is ~. There are ~.
車の中に蚊がいます。
× The car has a mosquito. → There is a mosquito in the car.
