Grandpa: Could you pass the butter, darling?
バターを回してくれるかな、お前。
Grandma: Sure. いいわよ。
Grandpa: Thank you. You know, I’ve gotten used to seeing Roxy in that chair.
ありがとう。なあ、ロキシーがその椅子に座っているのを見るのに
慣れてしまったね。
目的語説明型
seeing以下は目的語と説明語句との間に「＝(イコール)」あるいは
「主語-述語」の関係がある目的語説明型。「Roxy=in that chairを見る」
I miss her. 彼女がいなくて寂しいよ。
Grandma: She’ll be back in three weeks.
彼女は３週間の内には帰ってくるのよ。
Grandpa: Right. I wonder if she’s having a good time in Japan.
その通り。彼女が日本でいい時間を過ごせているのだろうかと心配だよ。
Grandma: I’m sure she’s catching up with her mom and dad.
彼女はパパとママと一緒に話の花を咲かせていると思うわよ。
Grandpa: You’ll have to make that seafood paella again.
お前はまたあのシーフードパエリアを作らないとね。
will have to make～ 「～しなくてはならないでしょう」
have to「しなければなりません」より、やわらかく響く。
Roxy loves that. ロキシーが大好きなんだよね。
Grandma: Yes, but I put in too much salt last time.
ええ、でも前回作った時は塩が多く入れ過ぎちゃったわね。
I’ll be more careful. もっと気をつけなくちゃね。
Feel English Key Sentence
I’ve gotten used to seeing Roxy in that chair.
inは「内部にある」、そしてそこから「包まれ感」につながる。この文のin that chairは、ロキシーの座っていた椅子が肘掛けのあるゆったりしたものだということ。
on the chairなら、拙速感を表現する。
① in「内部にある」だが、そこへの動きも表す
・I’ll put in too much salt last time. put～in「～を中に入れる」
・Come in. 入ってください。
・get in the car 車に乗り込む
・move in that direction その方向に向かう
「方角」にはin、「方角」は範囲を示しており、その「中に」ということ
② 「内部」が「範囲」につながる

penやpencilに限定詞がなく数えられない名詞扱いなのは、そういう
「やり方」 を指示しているから。

じかにお目にかかるのを楽しみにしていました。
④ 家や流行など、何の「中」なのか、はしょった言い方
・Do you want to eat in? 家で食べていですか？
・She’s never in when I phone her. 彼女は私が電話をかけてもいつもいません。
・Bright colors are in this year. 今年は明るい色が流行です。

13．Will these clothes fit in the drawer? 引き出しにこの服が入るの？
