Sally: Bob, are all these paintings yours?

        ボブ先生、これらの絵は全部あなたがお描きになった物ですか？

Bob: No, actually, most of them were painted by my sister, Isabel.

　　いいや、実は、ほとんどは妹のイサベルによって描かれたんだよ。

      ・受動態

         受動態は主語を過去分詞(～される)で説明する説明型の文で、

         形容詞を使ったwe are happy.と変わらぬ質感をもっている。

    ・byは「近く」のイメージ、ここでは「行為者」を表す。

       出来事が誰の「近く」で行われていたのかを示す。　

Sally: Wow, she’s a great artist, just like you.

         わあ、彼女は偉大な芸術家ですね、あなたと同じように。

Bob: I’d say she’s the most talented artist in our family.

        彼女は我が家で最も才能豊かな芸術家だと言ってもいいでしょうね。

      She also speaks the best Spanish, apart from my mom, of course.

 　　彼女はまたスペイン語も一番上手なんだよ。もちろん母を別にすればね。

Sally: Oh, yes. I remember your mom is Mexican,

　     ええ、そうですね。あなたのお母さんはメキシコの方でしたね。

Bob: That’s right.  その通りです。

Sally: So, you must be fluent in Spanish.

        それでは、先生もきっとスペイン語が流暢なんですね。

Bob: Yes, but not as fluent as Isabel.

       まあね、でもイサベルほど流暢ではないんだよ。

　　・as ～ as…の否定

　　　「…ほど～ではない」。単に「＝(イコール)ではない」ではなく、

　　　イザベルの方が上手であることに注意。

最上級(最も～)

I’d(=I would) say she’s the most talented artist in our family.

最上級は、形容詞・副詞に-estの語尾(長い単語の場合はmost)を加えた変化形。

theをその前につける、the most talented(最も才能がある)。

通常の形容詞・副詞と同じ位置に置く。

1. She is the most talented on my team.

   彼女は私のチームで最も才能があります。

　be動詞の後ろの、通常の形容詞が占める位置にthe most talented

2. She speaks Spanish the most fluently.

　彼女はスペイン語を最も流暢に話します。

　speaks Spanish fluentlyと同じ位置にthe most fluently

最上級には形容詞・副詞とともにtheが使われるのが標準。

theは「ひとつに決まる」を表す限定詞で、最上級は「最も～」を表すので、

「最も～」なら「ひとつに決まる」だろうとの類推が働き、加えられる。

感覚的な使い方なので、気軽な会話や文体、副詞の最上級ではしばしば省略される。

3. カオリはわが社で最もタフな交渉人です。

    Kaori is the toughest negotiator in our company.

4. サイモンは私の家族で最もハンサムです。

   Simon is the most handsome in my family.

5. 私の兄弟姉妹のうち、一番年下の妹は勉学を最も真面目に考えています。

   Out of all my siblings, my youngest sister takes her sturdies the most seriously.

  takeは「受け取る＝考える」ということ。最上級のthe most seriouslyで修飾している。

       → No. I feel fine.

3. Tell me your thoughts about the President of the United States.

       → Uhm…I don’t know much about her, but she seems kind and thoughtful.

          And she seems like a good leader, so far.
