Yuko: Do you remember this park, Thomas?

         あなた、この公園覚えてる、トーマス？

　　　We walked around here last year.

       私たち去年この周りを散歩したのよ。

　　　　　説明ルール

      　　　 日本語と英語の語順は主語を除けばキレイに反転するのが常、この文でも

　　　　　「walked → around here → last year」が日本語訳は「去年→この辺りを

　　　　　→散歩しました」とまったく反転している。

　　　　　この語順の違いは「説明ルール：説明は後ろに置く」で克服する。

　　　　　We walkedの場所・時間を説明するためaround here、last yearが

　　　　　その後ろに配置されるのを意識する。

Thomas: Of course. It’s beautiful.

          　もちろんですよ。美しいですよね。

　　　　And the weather today is perfect for cycling along the river.

       　　それに、今日の天気は川沿いをサイクリングするのに最適ですよね。

Yuko: Absolutely. By the way, I hear there’s a new Big West Coffee

　　　somewhere along here.

      　その通りね。ところで、ビック・ウエスト・コーヒーが新しいお店を

　　　どこかこの辺りに出したって聞いたわ。

Thomas: Let’s go. I’d love a large Hiroto’s iced café latte right now.

          　行きましょう。僕はちょうど今、ヒロトのアイスカフェラテのラージサイズが

　　　　飲みたくってたまらないんです。

Yuko: Me too. I’m really thirsty.

         私もよ。とても喉が渇いているの。

　　  指定ルール

　　「説明ルール」に並ぶ英語の修飾ルールは「指定ルール：指定は前に置く」。

　　　reallyはthirstyの「レベル」を「本当に(レベルで)喉が渇いている」と指定

          している。

Thomas: Oh, look. I can see the sign just up ahead.

              おっ、見て。お店のサインがもうちょっと先に見えますよ。

Yuko: Great. Come on, I’ll race you there!

         すごい。さあ、あそこまでどちらが早いか競争よ。

Feel English   Key Sentence

The weather today is perfect for cycling along the river.

alongは細長い線状のものに「沿った」動き・位置を表す前置詞。ここでは「川」に沿った動きでcycling along the riverとなる。

① 細長いものに沿った動き

　・walk along the beach 　ビーチを歩く

　・walk along the street   通りを歩く

② 細長いものに沿った「場所」を表す

　・You can find it along the street. 　

　　それを通り沿いに見つけることが出来ますよ。

　・ You can find it along the way.  

　　それを道中で(ここに至る途中で)見つけることが出来ますよ。

③・Move along.   (立ち止まらず)お進みください。

　　動いていく(立ち去っていく)動線まで連想される表現。

　・Come along.   一緒に来て。　

　　ただ「来る」わけではなく、話し手の動きに沿い同行することが期待されている。

　・Take an umbrella along.   傘を持って行って。

　　人と傘が寄り添っていくという意味で。

④ ・get along (well) with～　　　～と仲良くやっていく

　　getは「動き」を表す動詞。誰かに「沿って(うまく)動く」ことから、

　　「衝突せずに仲良くやる」。

　・ You knew all along who did it, didn’t you?

       あなたは、初めからずっと誰がそれをしたのか分かっていたのですね？

　　all alongは今に至る事態の流れが意識され「初めからずっと」。

Expressions in Action

1.　ビーチの散歩にすてきな晩ですね。

　　It’s a lovely evening for a walk along the beach.

       beachは細長いためalongが使われる。

　　この文でitは周囲の状況を受け、「すてきな晩ですね」と言い切ってから、

　　「何のための」をfor以下で加える。

2.　あなたは、初めから彼女が冗談を言っていると分かっていたのですよね？

　　You knew all along that she was joking, right?

        文全体はknew all alongの内容を節で説明するリポート文。

　　「, right?」は「だよね？」と加える「ちょこっと疑問」

3.　水着を持って来るのを忘れないで。

        Don’t forget to bring a swimsuit along.

       水着と人と寄り添うためalong後が使われている。along with you とする

       こともある。

REPLY

1.　May I take your temperature?

   →　Sure. Go ahead.

2. Which vaccine did you get?

   → I had two Pfizer vaccines and for the third Moderna one.

3.　Do you have any cold symptoms?  How are you feeling now?

   → I’m fine. I have a normal temperature and I don’t have

      any cold symptoms. I’m just a little tired.
