SAY IT IN ENGLISH

1.Coworker : Helen says she wants to quit.

You: ① You have to persuade her not to.

   あなたは彼女が辞めないように説得しなければならないわ。

       ・persuade(説得する)を使った目的語説明型の文。

       ・to不定詞「to以下の行為に進むように」。notを加え、「herが辞め(る方向に

          進ま)ないように説得する」

       ・toの後ろにはquitが省略されている

  ② You won’t be able to find anybody as efficient as her.

   あなたは彼女ほど有能な人を誰も見つけることが出来ないだろうから。

  won’twillの否定形。助動詞は重ねて用いることは出来ないので、

   ×won’t can→○won’t be able to

  ・find以降はanybody as efficient as …(…と同じくらい有能な)で説明。

   -thing/-one/-bodyで終わる名詞は意味が漠然としているため、しばしば

   後ろに説明を書く。

2.Coach : Who do you recommend tor captain?

  You: ① I recommend Bill. He may not be as good as the previous captain,

                   but he is twice as good as Dave.

               私はビルを推薦します。彼は前のキャプテンほど良くないかもしれませんが、

               デーブの倍はいいです。

            ・not as~ as…「…ほど~ではない」。単に「≠」ということではない。

            ・may butの組み合わせ文「~かもしれないが、…」

           ・twice as good as 「倍数表現+ as~ as…

   ② Don’t you thik so?

    そう思いませんか?

 A Swamp Tour in Louisiana

 

1. Hi y’all. To enjoy the swamp animals, first, let’s train your ears…

    I’ll make an animal sound. Listen…What’s this animal?

 → It’s definitely a bird. Maybe an eagle…

2. It’s a pelican…It’s Louisiana’s state bird.

   Can you find any pelicans out there in the swamp?

   → Yeah! I see one! That’s a brown pelican.

3. Look! A pelican is flying up there…He dove into the water…to get some fish!

  Oh…Are you scared of bugs?

   → No…Not really. I used to LOVE cathing butterflies and beetles.

      I hate cockroaches, though. Why do you ask?

4. Ah, actually…hold still…there’s a …bug…on your pant leg…

   It is a praying mantis. Do you see it?

  → What?!  Oh go on little guy.

5. OK…Well next, here are your vinoculars… Let’s try them…just focus on that  sign…            oh  my  golly! Can you see the BIG alligator in the water?!

 → Wow! I’ve never seen an alligator with my own eyes.   It’s pretty scary.

6. Oh! She’s coming closer. And you’re in for a treat.

    There is a baby alligator righ there too! What do you think!

   → It’s actually so cute! Oh, I need to take a picture!
