比較⑯as～as…を用いたフレーズ1

Yuko: Hello? Thomas?

         もしもし、トーマス？

Thomas: Yuko, I need your help!

               ユウコ、助けてください！

Yuko: What’s(has) happened?

          何があったの？

Thomas: I got a flat tire while I was riding my bike.

              自転車に載っている間にタイヤをパンクさせちゃったんです。

              whileのイメージ

　　　　while(～の間)は２つの出来事が同時に起こった・起こっている

　　　　ことを示す接続詞。ここでは①タイヤがパンクしたと②自転車に

　　　　乗っていたことが同時に起こったことを示す。

　　    I’m far away from any town.

           どこの町からも遠いんだよ。

Yuko: OK, keep calm.

         分かったわ。落ち着いて。

　　I’ll get there as fast as I can.

       できるだけ早くそちらに着くようにするわ。

　　You’re not hurt, are you?

        怪我はしてないわよね？

Thomas: No, I’m fine. It’s raining here, though

　　　　いや、大丈夫。雨が降って来たけどもね。

　　　 This has never happened to me before.

             こんなこと今まで一度だってなかったのに。

Yuko: OK, just wait there

         分かったわ、そこで待っててね。

.　　 I’ll get my car. Please send me your exact location.

       　車を用意するわ。あなたの正確な位置情報を送って。

　　I should be able to find you.

       あなたをきっと見つけられるわ。

　　　　should be able to ～

　　　　shouldは「進むべき道」をイメージとする助動詞。

　　　　①「この道を進め」ならアドバイス・助言(～するべき)

　　　　②事態が「この道に沿って進展していく」なら「～のはず」のニュアンス

　　　　　should be able to ～「～できるばずだ」

Thomas: Thank you!

         　　ありがとう！

as～as…can　…ができるだけ～

ここではできるだけ早く。「可能なのと同じくらい →できるだけ」

as～as possibleも同じ

1. The boss needs this report as soon as possible.

 　　上司はなるべく早くこのレポートを必要としています。

2. I’m as happy as can be.

  　　私は最高に幸せです。

　　　as～as can be「なりうるのと同じくらい～ →最高に～」

3. Trust me, it’s as good as new!

 　　 信じてください、新品同様です！

　　　as good as…「ほどんど…・…同様」

　　　ここでのgoodは「通用する・OK」My passport is good for ten years.

1. 私は出来る限り一生懸命やってみました。

　　I tried as hard as I could.

2. 大丈夫。ここでは、あなたは最高に安全ですから。

　　Don’t worry. Here you’re as safe as can be.

3. その取引は成功したも同然ですよ。

　　The deal is as good as done.

 　　done「なされた・成し遂げられた」

　　 Consider it done.「it＝doneだと考えてください →お安い御用」

　 → I don’t know much about dinosaurs, actually.

        But I guess my favorite dinosaur is a T-rex.

3. How do you kike the museum so far?

　 → It’s bigger than I expected. I have never seen so many dinosaur bones.

        I wonder if I can see the whole dinosaur exhibition in just one day…
