Grammar and vocabulary
Doris: Bill, excellent job. That was another amazing concert.
ビル、凄い演奏だったわ。今回もまた素晴らしいコンサートだったわね。
Bill: Thanks, Doris. ありがとう、ドリス。
The fans really loved our Mount Fuji set.
ファンの皆んなは我々の富士山の舞台装置を本当に気に入ってくれました。
Doris: Yes, and I was really impressed by your singing.
ええ、そして私はあなたの歌に本当に感動したわ。
感情を表す動詞の過去分詞
感情を表す動詞の多くは過去分詞が主語の感情を笑わす。この文では
impressed(感動・感心して)がI(私)の感情を表している。それはその動詞の殆どが
他動型で使われる「他動詞」だから。impress(感動させる)の過去分詞は
「感動させられる→ 感動して」となる。
I think you’re an amazing singer.
私、あなたって最高のシンガーだと思う。
Bill: You’re too kind.
それほどでもないですよ。
相手に褒められた時の謙遜の言葉。「そんなことを言ってくれるなんて、
あなたはあまりに親切です」。 真意は「そんなことありません」。
Doris: Your voice reminds me of John Lennon’s.
あなたの歌声ってジョン・レノンの歌を思い出させるわ。
Bill: A lot of people say that. I don’t look like him, though.
多くの人がそう言うね。だけど僕は見た目、彼には似てないけど。
thoughくだけた口語で文末でもOK。althoughはフォーマルな表現、通常は文頭に。Doris: That’s true, you don’t.
それはそうね。似てはいないわ。
Anyway, I have enough footage for the documentary now.

Feel English Key Sentence
I think you’re an amazing singer.
thinkは「思う・考える」。この文はリポート文、thinkの内容を後ろの節が説明し、
印象を述べている。
1. ① think hard / carefully / deeply しっかり / 注意深く / 深く 考える
think positive / big プラス思考で/ 野心的に 考える
think about it よく考える
Let me think. 考えさせてください。
② thinkの名詞形thought
give it some thought 「(多少の時間をかけて)考える」
give it a lot of thought 「(たくさんの時間をかけて)考える」
2. I’m sorry, but I don’t think it’ll work.
申し訳ありませんが、うまくいくとは思いません。
I thinkは言いづらい内容のクッションとして、また確信が持てない内容にも使う。
I think the last train leaves at 11:50, but I’m not sure.
終電は11:50発だと思うけど、よくわかりません。
3. 意図」を表す
I think I’ll go shopping. 買い物に行こうかなって思います。
4. 「予期する」を表す
My homework took longer tan I thought.
宿題は思ったよりも時間がかかりました。
5. 「意見」を述べる
I think it’s a great idea. 良いアイデアだと思います。
I don’t think it’s a great idea. 良いアイデアだとは思いません。
「意見」を尋ねる
what do you think of~? ~をどう思いますか?
6. 「みなす」の使い方
I thought him (to be) a reasonable person.
彼は道理のわかる人だと思いました。(目的語説明型)
Expressions in Action
1. 私はいつも学生たちにプラス思考で考えるように言います。
I always tell my students to think positive.
tellを使った目的語説明型。相手に「指示」を出し、to以下の行為に進ませる。
2. 昼寝しようかな?
I think I’ll take a nap.
3. 彼は頼りがいのある人だと思いました。
I thought him a reliable guy.
