Grammar and vocabulary
Kelly: Takuma, I want to cancel our wedding in October.
タクマ、10月の私たちの結婚式を取りやめたいんだけど。
Takuma: Cancel? Why? We’ve already sent out the invitations.
取りやめる?どうして?僕たちもう招待状を出したんだよ。
Kelly: Well, we can send out letters saying we’re canceling it.
そうね、私たち辞めますっていう手紙を出すことも出来るのよね。
説明ルール
lettersの後ろにはsaying以下が置かれ、lettersの説明となっている。
英語の修飾ルール「説明ルール:説明は後ろに置く」が生み出す形。日本語訳
の「それをやめるという手紙」と語順が逆転してしまうことに注意。
Takuma: But why? What’s the problem?
でも、どうして?何が問題なの?
Kelly: I don’t think we should get married right now.
私達が今すぐに結婚式を挙げなくちゃならないとは思わないの。
否定の前倒し
日本語では①「~ではないと思う」と②「~だとは思わない」はどちらも同じ
くらいの頻度だが、英語では思考系動詞を否定する②が標準。
①I think we shouldn’t~より、②I don’t think we should~が使われる。
文の始まりを聞いただけで、相手が肯定的な話をしようとしているのか、
否定的なのかが分かる便利な形である。
Takuma: That’s what we decided. We have to stand by our decision.
それは僕たちが決めたことじゃないか。僕たちは決めたことを守らなくちゃ。
Kelly: But are you going to stand by me? Isn’t that more important?
でも私の味方になってくれるわよね。そっちの方がもっと大切なことじゃない?
Takuma: Of course it is.
もちろん、そうだけど。
Feel English Key Sentence
We have to stand by our decision.
stand byは「(約束などを)守る・支持する、味方になる」と、さまざまに訳されるが、
要するに「そばに立っている」ということ。「待機(スタンバイ)する」という意味も
あるが、こちらも出番が来たらすぐに手を出すことが出来るように「そばに立って
いる」の意味。by「近接(~の近く・そば)」の基本イメージは不変。
① They were walking side by side. 彼らは並んで歩いていた。
side by sideは「隣り合って、協力して」。side(側面)とsideがby「近い」、
そこから「並んで」。
② His English is improving little by little.
彼の英語は少しずつ(絶えず)上達しています。
・ step by step 一歩ずつ
・ day by day 日ごとに
・ one by one ひとつずつ
これらのフレーズに共通するのは「連続性」。little by littleは「少しずつ、
絶えず」、このニュアンスはやはりbyから生まれている。littleとlittleが
「近い」、つまり大きく開かず「連続して」という意味となる。
③ I but $5 by every week for a rainy day.
万が一のために、私は毎週5ドルためています。
but~by[aside]が「~をためる・とっておく」の意味でつかわれている。この
フレーズは「使わず・捨てずにとっておく」、つまり「近くに・脇に置いておく」
のbyの基本イメージ。
