Alexis: What are you going to do with that new camera, Caspar?
その新しいカメラで何をしようとしているの、キャスパー？
Caspar: I told you, Alexis. I’m starting my own internet video channel.
君に話したよ、アレクシス。インターネットで動画のチャンネルを開設
するんだ。
Alexis: What are you going to film?
何を撮影しようとしているの？
Caspar: Our cat Umi, of course.
僕たちの飼い猫のウミだよ、当然。
Don’t you know how popular pet videos are?
ペット動画がどんなに人気かって、君知らないの？
wh節
この文のhow以下は疑問形ではない、「ペット動画がどんなに人気が
ある(のか)」という文で、wh節と呼ぶ。be動詞が前に出た疑問形の
wh疑問文How popular are pet videos?「ペット動画はどのくらい
人気があるのですか？」としっかり区別する。
Alexis: No, I’m not really interested.
いいえ、私そんなに興味ないし。
notと強い表現のコンビネーション
notが強い単語really(本当に)を否定して「それほど～ではない」となっている。
notは後ろを否定する単語で、その語順に注意が必要。I’m really not interested.
とするとnotが否定するのはinterestedで、reallyは否定されず「私は本当に(全然)
興味ありません」となってしまう。
Caspar: Well, I’m way behind schedule.
まあ、予定からはかなり遅れちゃっているんだけど。
I wanted to make my first one by tomorrow.
明日までに第1作を作って置きたかったんだよ。
Where is Umi anyway?
それはそうと、ウミはどこにいるんだい？
Alexis: She’s hiding behind the curtain,
彼女ならカーテンの後ろに隠れているわよ。
Caspar: Umi, come, out! I can’t film you when you’re hiding there.
ウミ 出ておいで！君がそこに隠れていたら、撮影出来ないじゃないか。
Alexis: Oh, boy. やれやれ。
Feel English Key Sentence
She’s hiding behind the curtain,
behind「～の後ろに」。in front of「～の前に」とは逆の位置関係を表す前置詞。
hide behind～「～の後ろに隠れる」はよく使われるコンビネーションで、behindという
位置そのものに「見えない・隠れる」という連想が強く働くため。
① she was standing behind the wall / me.
彼女は 壁/私 の後ろに立っていました。
② 「後ろ」は「遅れ」とつながる。
・ I’m way behind schedule.
way「はるかに・ずっと」でbehindを強調している。
・ He’s behind with his work. 彼は仕事がおくれています。
・ behind time (定刻より)遅れて
③ 「見えない・隠れている」というニュアンスのフレーズ
・ behind the scenes 舞台裏で(表舞台には現れていない)
・ behind her smile 彼女の微笑みの裏に
・ Stop talking behind my back. 陰でコソコソ話すのはやめて。
Backは「背中」、「見えないところで」というニュアンス
④ 「後ろ」は支える位置、そこから「支持する」という使い方が生まれる
・ We’re 100% behind the new CEO’s plan.
私たちは新しいCEOの計画を100％支持します。

1. テレビの後ろには2つのプラグがあります。

2. 私のリポートはちょっと遅れています。ごめんなさい。
I’m a bit behind with my report. Sorry.
behind with～「～に遅れている」。behindという状態がmy reportと
「つながっている」ことがwithで示されている。
3. 私は脚光を浴びるよりも舞台裏で静かに仕事をする方を好みます。
I prefer to work quietly behind the scenes than to be in the limelight.
・prefer to～「～するのをより好む」
・in the limelight「脚光を浴びて・注目されて」。
behind the scenes「密かに・水面下で」と真逆。

＊情報収集のコツ
情報源と言えば一頃はラジオ、テレビ、新聞であったが、現代はインターネット
ニュースやSNS など多岐にわたるので、

＊感じの良い表現の工夫
① 意地悪だね
