Lesson154 感形容詞もイメージで②:豊かな表現力
I know that seasonal expressions are essential for haiku.
俳句には季語が必要不可欠だということを、私は知っています。
「重要な」を意味する形容詞はimportant以外にもいくつかあり、essentialもその一つ。
essenceが「本質・核心」を表すことから、「絶対に必要な」というニュアンス。
importantは特別な色合いを持たない。
1. vitalは「生命に関わる」というイメージ。vital signsは心拍・血圧などの
「生命兆候」。そこから「極めて重要な」につながる。
① vital evidence / role 極めて重要な 証拠 / 役割
② vital for survival 生き残りに不可欠な
③ vital for recovery 回復に不可欠な
④ vital for a leader 指導者に不可欠な
⑤ vital for our success 私たちの成功に不可欠な
⑥ vital for japan 日本に不可欠な
問3. It’s vital you say nothing about this to anyone.
あなたがこのことについて、誰にも何も言わないことが極めて重要です。
・pit’s vital (that)~(~が極めて重要です)の形。
・sayは原形。
2. keyは「鍵・カギとなる」。可能性や理解などへの扉を開く重要性を帯びている。
前置詞はkey to the door 「ドアの鍵」のようにtoを合わせる。
① key aim 主な目標
② key area 主な分野
③ key point 主なポイント
④ key role 主な役割
⑤ key issue 主な問題
⑥ Education is the key to success. 教育は成功への鍵だ。
問2. You played a key role in the success of our sales campaign.
あなたは私たちの販売キャンペーンの成功に、主要な役割を果たした。
・play a role 「役割を果たす」。
3. crucialのイメージは「cross(十字)」。成り行きを決定づける「岐路」、そこから
「極めて重要な・決定的な」。crucial、important、essential、vitalといった
「重要な」を意味する形容詞は、「It’s + 重要な+that~」の形で「(これから)
~することが重要だ)を意味する。that以降の動詞が原形(あるいはshould+動詞原形)
であることに注意。that以降の内容が現実になっていないことから、現在形が
さけられている。
① crucial decision 極めて重大な決定
② crucial mistake 極めて重大なミス
③ crucial clue 極めて重大な手がかり
④ crucial data 極めて重大なデータ
⑤ crucial for our future 私たちの未来にとって極めて重要な
⑥ It’s crucial that your report be handed in by tomorrow.
君のリポートが明日までに提出されることが極めて重要です。
