1. Friend: You look lost in thought. 何か考え込んでるようだけど。
You:
① Well, I was invited to Ellie’s birthday party.
そうねえ、エリーの誕生日パーテイーに誘われたんだけど。
But she’s going out with my ex, so actually I don’t want to go.
でも彼女、私の元彼とつきあっていて、実は行きたくないのよ。
・go out with～「～とつきあう」。
・actually「実は」、相手にとって意外な内容を持ち出すときによく使われる。
② I have to come up with a reason for not showing up.
出席しない理由を考えなくちゃならないのよ。
・come up with～「～を考え出す」。
・a reason for～「～の理由」の後ろにshowing up(現れる・顔を出す・出席する)を
使っているが、その前にnotを置くのがここでのポイント。
2. Coworker: What can we do? We have no time.
どうしたらいいの？もう時間がないのに。
You:
① Calm down. Even though we’re running out of time, I’m sure
we can work it out.
落ち着いて。たとえ時間は少なくなっていても、私たちならきっとうまく
やれるよ。
・run out of～「～がなくなる」
・ work it out「うまくやる」
・I’m sure以下はam sure(確信している)の内容を後ろの節が説明する
リポート文の形。
② Let me see the file. I’m a computer whiz, you know.
ファイルを見せて。私はコンピュータの天才なんだ、知ってるよね。
・Let me see～「～を見せてください」。目的語説明型の文。「meが～を見るのを
let(許して)」ということ。

→ Maybe not…Poor us…Well, I don’t mind.
3. Is Christmas a working day or a holiday in Japan?
→ If it’s on a weekday, it’s not a holiday. People usually work on the 25th.
4. I see. So, what are your plans for New Year’s Eve?
→ I’m not sure yet. Maybe I’ll stay home and watch the countdown
on TV. And I’ll definitely call my family.
5. Well, today someone has to dress up as Santa. Should I dress up as Santa,
or will you dress up as Santa?
→ Let’s do rock paper scissors to decide.
6. Good idea! Ready…Rock, paper, scissors, shoot.
Oh, you lost. So…you dress up as Santa. Here’s the costume. Just change
in there…you look great! How does the Santa costume feel?
→ I feel a little awkward… but I feel some Christmas spirit.
7. So…As Santa just say, “Ho Ho Ho. Merry Christmas.” to the guests, OK?

아や어が縮約された아/어形
「行きます」の가요の가-のように、아や어がついていない아/어形を見てみる。
가요の가-は、語幹가-に아がついて가아-、これが縮まって가-。結果的に「行く」は
語幹も아/어形も同じ形の가-。
語幹と아/어形が同じ形になる用言を確認しよう。

① 語幹末の最後に子音(パッチム)がない。(同様に語幹末の母音がㅓオ,ㅔエである)
② 母音が아アまたはㅐエである。
→つまり、語幹末の文字が、パッチムがなく、「ㅣイ」以外の縦棒の長い母音
「 ㅏア ㅓオ ㅐエ ㅔエ」ならば、語幹と아/어形は同じ。
「ㅣイ」の場合は、語幹と아/어形が異なる。
