Deena: Masaya, did you remember to bring the curry roux?
マサヤ、カレールーを持って来るのを覚えていた？
rememberの目的語、文意が異なる ①to不定詞 ②動詞－ing形
①to不定詞「(これから)～することを覚えている・忘れない」
②動詞－ing形「(過去に)～したことを覚えている」
Masaya: Yes, Deena. I didn’t forget this time.
ああ、デイーナ。今回は忘れなかったよ。
I bought two kinds, just in case.
念のため、2種類買ってきたよ。
Deena: OK. I like the medium‐hot kind.
オーケー。私は中辛が好きなのよ。
Masaya: Me, too. Oh, it’s stopped raining.
僕もだよ。あ、雨が止んだよ。
I can build the campfire now.
さあ、キャンプファイヤーの櫓が組めるね。
Deena: Make sure you use dry branches.
乾いた木を使うように確かめてね。
Masaya: I know that, Deena.
僕だって知ってるさ、デイーナ。
I’m not that clueless, you know.
僕はそれほど無知じゃないよ、ねえ。
that + 形容詞 「これほど、それほど」と形容詞を修飾し、
そのレベルを表現する。
Deena: OK, let’s stop chatting and get to work!
いいわ、じゃ、おしゃべりは止めて仕事にかかりましょう！
Masaya: Yes, boss. 了解、ボス。
Deena: And please be careful. そして、どうか気を付けてね。
Feel English Key Sentence
let’s stop chatting and get to work!
stop「停止」を意味する最も一般的な単語。この文では「おしゃべりをやめる」。
and以下のget to workは「work「(仕事)に到達(＝着手)する」。「～をやめて
仕事を始めよう」。
他に stop the car / the CD その車/そのCD」を止めるなど。
- stop「～するのをやめる」という場合は、具体的な状況を思い起こさせる
動詞－ing形限定。目的語としてto不定詞を用いることはできない。
この動詞はリアルな出来事を想起させる「リアリテイ動詞」で、具体的な出来事
でなければやめることが出来ないため。
①stop talking 話すのをやめる
②stop smoking たばこをやめる
③stop working 仕事をやめる(＝終える)
④it’s stopped raining. 雨がやみました。
2. stopが自動型で使われると「止まる・立ち止まる・立ち寄る」
stop to～でto不定詞は目的語ではなく、stop止まるの目的を表す修飾フレーズ。
①The bus stopped. バスが止まった。
②He stopped. 彼は立ち止った。
③stop to catch my breath 立ち止って一息入れる。
④stop to think 立ち止って考える(ゆっくり考える)
⑤stop for lunch at a café 昼食をとろうとカフェに立ち寄る
3. The bus is stopping. そのバスは止まりかけています。
進行形で使われるstopに注意。「止まっている」わけではなく、「動→静」への
移行中。「止まりかけている」
4. stopはさまざまなことを「やめさせる」ことができる。
①stop the fight 争いをやめさせる
②stop the war 戦争をやめさせる
③stop them arguing 彼らの口喧嘩をやめさせる
④「引き止める・阻止する」
Nobody can stop me. 誰も私を止めることはできません。
Expressions in Action
1. なぜあなたは、彼と付き合うのをやめたのですか？
Why did you stop dating him?
・date「～と付き合う」。stopをはリアリテイ動詞であるため、
「～するのをやめる」場合、目的語は動詞－ing形。
2. どうして電車が止まりかけているのかわかりません。
I don’t know why the train is stopping.
why以下はwh節、疑問の意味を持たない文の部品と考える。
3. 何とかその水漏れを止めることができた。
I managed to stop the leak.
・leak「漏れること」。秘密などの「漏洩」にも。
・manage to～は、「どうにか～する」。
